Hello!

I'm trying to reconnect with the cycle of the seasons by eating seasonal foods. I'm not going to pretend that I'm only going to eat foods that are in season or anything like that, but I'm going to plan my meals around the season I'm in. I'm hoping this will help me feel more connected to the cycle of the earth, as well as make food prep fun.

So, I'm wondering...what foods or meals say "October" to you? They can be healthy or unhealthy; ingredients or meals.

For example, I think of apples and sage and squash when I think October, but I also think Chili, roasted sage chicken, candy corn, and apple pie.

I'd love to know what foods you associate with October! Thanks!

Foods that scream "Autumn" to me include:

smoked meats, like smoked turkey or chicken, or sausage
sharp, firm cheeses (often paired with the above in a nice sandwich) and also heavily-herbed goat cheese
apples (I've been eating Macouns from the local orchard like they're going out of style) and pears
dark chocolate
most types of Mexican food (fire-roasted flavors, spices, and things that are eaten while watching football games for $200, Alex)
turnips
roasted pumpkin
potato soup with lots of onion, celery, and flour-and-water spaetzle tossed in to just barely cook
nuts - mostly walnuts and pecans (my high school debate team sold bagged nuts every fall to earn money for our competition travel)
Pennsylvania-style pot pie, which is more like chicken and noodles than an actual "pie" (the New England "pie" style is more winter food to me)
beef stroganoff
cornbread
dried apricots
tandoori chicken (fall = going back to college = availability of ethnic food, I think)
casseroles, pressure cooker and crock pot meals

some specific menus:

apple salad - mixed greens, a good eating apple, toasted walnuts, crumbled bleu cheese, and a balsamic vinagrette (or cider vinagrette). eaten with a roasted chicken, this makes a fabulous meal, or the salad itself makes a good meal with some hearty bread.

roasted pumpkin done with a savory blend of middle eastern spices and a bit of honey paired with a lentil dish and greens. One of the best meals I ever had was something similar to this in an afghani restaurant, and I try and try to recapture it by playing with these ingredients, but it's never as good...though it's still fairly tasty.

Thanks for the ideas!

Now, I'm hungry for Indian food!
